Walking Trails

We have worked with a range of clients on design, construction, and maintenance of a range of walking trails within local parks and reserves and National Parks. Our experience has included redefining overgrown trails, removing, and replacing timber steps, installing small bridges using FRP and full regrade with imported VENOM material. Our walking trails aim to provide a safe user experience that reduces impacts of foot traffic on our local environment. Our trails are designed in with the natural features of any site including surface rocks and tree roots to ensure seamless integration of our works.

Project: Kangarutha Track Renewal

Client: NSW National Parks & Wildlife Merimbula

Budget: $637,000

Timeframe: Completed August 2025 (3 months)

Description:

This project involved the planning, design, and construction of a Grade 3 walking trail in accordance with the Australian Walking Track Grading System. Our scope included preparation of key project documentation such as the Work Health and Safety Management Plan and Construction Environmental Management Plan, onsite trail scoping and design, GIS mapping, trail maintenance, and trail construction using hand tools. Due to the remote location and limited site access, more than 350 tonnes of materials were successfully transported via helicopter crane lift throughout the project.

Track building works featured the construction of rock steps using both site-won and imported materials, timber steps, retaining walls, rock corralling, rock paving, and rock and earth water bars and drainage structures, all completed by hand. A major focus of the project was ensuring long-term sustainability, with particular attention given to effective drainage and runoff management. To maintain consistency with the surrounding environment and existing trail conditions, natural granite was selected as the preferred imported material, with each stone carefully hand-selected—particularly step treads—to achieve the highest standards of functionality, safety, and aesthetics.

Description:

This project had a  focus on the installation and reconstruction of sandstone and timber stairs,
construction of new drainage features, reshaping and stabilisation of trail surfaces, and
remediation of eroded sections. These upgrades were essential to restoring safe public access,
improving water management, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the trail network. The project represented an important opportunity to reinforce the resilience of two of Lane Cove National Park’s most valued walking trails, ensuring they continue to provide safe, enjoyable, and environmentally responsible access for the community well into the future.

Additional works included cleaning existing drainage systems, repacking and repinning eroded step material, and carrying out detailed trail repairs using hand tools in a remote-access environment. All materials were sourced onsite, with works delivered through a flexible scope tailored to site conditions and client requirements

Project: Private Walking Trail*

Client: Private Client

Budget: $9,000

Timeframe: March 2026 (1 week)

Gus.jpeg

Description:

This project involved the construction of a private walking trail connecting the main residence to the lower paddock, providing safe and practical access across challenging terrain. The trail navigates steep gradients and natural creek lines, with carefully placed stepping stones allowing walkers to cross waterways while maintaining the flow and character of the landscape.

Given the steep conditions, specialised construction techniques were used to ensure stability and usability without compromising the natural environment. The design and build prioritised minimal intervention, allowing the trail to blend seamlessly into the surrounding land while preserving its raw, natural appeal.
